Worthing A Preview

Bristol Rovers v Worthing
FA Women's National League, The Sussex Transport Community Stadium, Sunday 14th September, 2:00pm.

Bristol Rovers Women will make the trip to the South-East coast to play Worthing this weekend, at The Sussex Transport Community Stadium.

For the fourth consecutive week, The Gas Girls have kept their opponents out, whilst adding two more goals last week to take their season’s tally to seven. Last Sunday’s result secured another three points against Marine Academy Plymouth and extended their strong start to the campaign.

After bagging her first goal for the club against Bournemouth Sports the previous week, Laura Barrett felt it marked the moment when the team would really “start hitting the ground running.”

The Defender remained confident that the Gas Girls “will keep this momentum,” and she backed it up by going on to score her second of the season against MAP on the weekend, once again highlighting the team's strength at both ends of the pitch. Assistant manager Chris Douglas credits this not to tactical changes but more as a reflection of some “impressive good training over the last few weeks.”

Looking ahead to Sunday, last week’s Player of the Match Thierry-Jo Gauvain has a clear plan of action: take that hard work from training and turn it into goals.

Opposition...

This week, Rovers face Worthing, who began the season with a 5-4 victory over Portishead on the opening day. Since then, however, they have suffered back-to-back defeats and currently sit ninth in the table. Worthing will undoubtedly be hungry for points, and as assistant manager Chris Douglas noted: “They are a solid team. They haven’t had the best of starts to the season, but at some point they are going to get some points - we just have to make sure it’s not against us.”

Previous Meetings...

Last season, Worthing finished just one place below Rovers, with only five points separating the two teams. Rovers had the upper hand, winning both home and away games. Their most recent meeting ended in a 2-1 win to Rovers, with both goals scored by Rianne Bourne-Hallett. The captain was on target again last weekend, after sealing the 2-0 win over Marine Academy with a superb curling effort straight into the back of the net.
