Bristol Rovers fell to a 3-2 defeat to York City on the opening day of the 2026/27 Sky Bet League Two season.
York began brightly, threatening through Harry Boyes and Dipo Akinyemi while the Rovers' defence absorbed wave after wave of early pressure. However, against the run of play, Keenan Gough sparked a counter that ended with Fabrizio Cavegn teeing up Clinton Mola for a close-range opener.
The Pirates pushed for a second as Cavegn and Shaq Forde continued to stretch York, but the hosts stayed in the game and levelled when Alex Newby swept in a low cross from the right. Moments later, Boyes put the Minstermen ahead with a composed left-footed finish from the edge of the box.
Rovers hit back when Forde was pushed at the back post, allowing Tommy Leigh to convert confidently from the spot, but York dealt the final blow to win a five-goal thriller, with Boyes heading in to lift the roof off the LNER Community Stadium.
York were the better side in the opening stages; there were huge appeals from the home side as Macauley Southam-Hales clashed with Boyes inside the box, but the referee waved it away. Akinyemi then forced the first save from Brad Young with a close-range header from Boyes' cross.
Rovers struggled to get into the game as York looked to dominate the ball. The Gas' defence were kept busy heading away a barrage of crosses from the newly promoted side, and forwards Cavegn and Joe Quigley found it difficult to hold the ball further up the pitch.
Alex Hunt found himself in space in the middle of the park, and he drove forward towards the Rovers box before flashing an effort wide of Young’s post. The hosts had the early chance, but the Gas gained the lead completely against the run of play. Keenan Gough battled in midfield before playing a fantastic ball in behind to Cavegn, whose cutback was perfect for Mola to convert.
Cavegn nearly doubled the lead after being released in behind by Forde, but his reversed effort was dealt with by McNally in the York goal. Forde continued to look dangerous, driving at the defenders at every opportunity, but it would be just a one-goal lead for the Gas at half-time.
Cavegn was played in behind early in the second half, and his cutback was good yet again, finding an arriving Forde, but his side-footed effort was blocked by Morgan Williams to prevent Rovers’ lead from being doubled.
A clever corner routine from the hosts nearly levelled the score as Ollie Pearce was found on the edge of the box, but he flashed his effort over the bar. York equalised soon after, with Joe Grey escaping Richie Smallwood and finding Boyes, who directed a low shot in.
York then took the lead through Boyes, who got the ball on the edge of the box and took a touch before thumping the ball beyond Young with his left foot to put Rovers behind.
Steve Evans' men battled back and were awarded a penalty in the closing stages after Forde was pushed in the back, with substitute Leigh striking his spot-kick into the bottom right corner. However, York fought back immediately, with Rovers unable to clear their lines before Boyes headed it in to give the hosts all three points.
