The hosts started the brighter of the two teams, but the Pirates took the lead before the half-time break. Keenan Gough, making his first start in the blue-and-white quarters, won possession brilliantly before lifting the ball down the left to Fabrizio Cavegn. The Swiss striker held onto it well before finding Clinton Mola, who finished off the move for his first Rovers goal since October 2024.
The Gas gained plenty of momentum, with Cavegn seeing his shot saved before the Minstermen turned the score around. Alex Newby levelled with a sweeping finish before Harry Boyes crashed in a second with a fine finish into the bottom corner.
Tommy Leigh equalled from the penalty spot before Boyes headed in York's third to seal all three points on their return to the English Football League.
