The Latics gained the lead inside 35 seconds through Kane Drummond, who got onto Mike Fondop's head down and fired an impressive effort from range past the reach of Brad Young.
The Pirates responded well to the early setback and dominated the chances for the remainder of the first half. Joe Quigley was just inches away from scoring against his former side, sending a close-range header just wide before Luke Thomas blasted over.
The Gas then went close again after the break, with Fabrizio Cavegn unable to convert before the hosts were awarded a penalty when Joel Senior was punished for a handball. Fondop had his spot-kick saved, but the ball dropped kindly for the striker to score the rebound. Rovers pushed for a way back into the game, but Oldham held onto their lead and the three points.
