The Pirates got off to a bright start on the road, with Ellis Harrison and Joel Senior driving efforts wide of the left post before the Gills had a penalty, with Riley Harbottle penalised for a handball inside the box despite being pushed in the back.
Steve Evans then made four changes at half-time in an attempt to get back into the contest. It had an immediate impact with Ryan de Havilland, one of the players introduced, lifting a cross towards Alfie Kilgour, who beat Jake Turner with a header.
The Pirates had all the momentum and got their second to go into the lead. Harrison and Luke Thomas were denied in quick succession, but Harrison was not to be denied again, firing in his shot from close range.
The Gas then defended valiantly to remain in the lead, with Armani Little sent off in the final moments after being shown a second yellow card.
