In a hectic seven-goal thriller, the Pilgrims started quickly off the mark and scored within two minutes, with Caleb Watts netting from close range to give the visitors the lead.
However, with a place in the Quarter-Finals up for grabs, Rovers responded with resilience. Fabrizio Cavegn sent a brilliant low cross towards Shaq Forde for his first goal of the season before the Swiss striker turned from provider to scorer, drilling a low strike into the bottom corner to give the Pirates the advantage.
Ahead at half-time, the Gas then found themselves behind within the first five minutes of the second half. Brendan Galloway netted seconds after coming on before Lorent Tolaj finished clinically turn the side in Plymouth's favour. Luke Thomas levelled it up with a super half-volley, but Argyle scored late on through Aribim Pepple to progress to the next round.
