Manager's Preview - Joey Barton on Crewe

30 April 2021

The Rovers Manager spoke with the local press on Friday morning via Zoom, ahead of this weekend's final league home fixture against Crewe Alexandra.

Barton alluded to the planning that has already taken place for next season, the goals for the last two games of the campaign and cast his attention on Saturday's opponents.

On plans for next season, the Manager said, "After you stop sulking, stop feeling sorry for yourself and you construct a plan.

"You say, 'okay, this is a fantastic opportunity for this football club to move forward.

"You are enthused by the uptake in season tickets and the passion of the fanbase so you go, 'okay, let's get cracking.

"We've done a lot of hard work over the next four days of what next season will look like."

The Manager also touched upon how's he's using his extensive networks of peers in the game to pick the brain of ex-teammates and fellow Manager's inside the EFL.

" I had some food with Paul Cook from Ipswich. A manager who has done lots of the divisions and has a lot of experience.

"Ryan Lowe, John Coleman, Mickey Mellon, who have done multiple divisions. I'll be on the phone to them picking their brains.

"Michael Duff, a teammate and good friend of mine, has just got Cheltenham out of League Two, so I spoke to him during the week.

On Saturday's visitors to the Mem, the Gas boss signalled that he wanted to see the return of a winning mentality within the squad.

"We've got to win. Football's about winning.

"I'll take a scrappy 1-0, because that taste, that feeling of winning is what we're here for. And we've got away from that.

"And that's the most disappointing thing that we've gotten away from that when we needed it the most."
