Academy Report: Rovers U18s 3-2 Newport County U18's

21 September 2020

The U18's picked up their first three points on Saturday afternoon.

In an entertaining encounter against Newport County, goals from Zak Ford and an Owen Brian brace picked up the victory.

Speaking about Saturday's win, Lead Professional Development Phase Coach, Tom Parrinello, said, "Saturday we hosted Newport County in our first home fixture of the season at Yate Town.

"After last weekend's disappointing performance in the defeat against a decent Swindon Town side, the boys were looking to bounce back positively against a competitive and aggressive Newport outfit.

"After a bright start, we conceded again from another set-piece which is becoming a habit at the minute, with all 3 goals last week coming from set-pieces. It's something that has to improve quickly because at the minute we look vulnerable every time there is a dead ball.

"The boys responded well and dominated the football in spells and created and missed some good chances until we equalised just after the half-hour mark.

"Zak Ford started the move by intercepting a pass and finding Owen Brain who slipped an excellent through ball into Matt Reed. Reed, keeping his composure, pulling the ball back for the onrushing Ford who calmly finished past the keeper for a very well-worked goal.

"The turnaround was complete a few minutes later when Reed intercepted a loose pass and this time and slipped in Owen Brain who expertly finished first time to give us a 2-1 lead at half time.

"Second half was scrappy and Newport went a little bit more direct in their approach to the game. They equalised from a poor piece of defensive play.

"The response was immediate with James Gorman picking out Reed in the channel. Reed swivelled and picked out Brain with a fantastic cross and the latter finished with a terrific header past the keeper to score the winning goal.

"Obviously to pick up our first 3 points of the season was pleasing, and the way the players stuck together and managed to grind out a win in what was a scrappy second-half performance was very pleasing and showed a decent winning mentality and togetherness to get a result.

"The performance first half was good in terms of what we have asked the players to do both in and out of possession and we managed to produce some nice phases of play, particularly in the build-up phase of our game, and overall we scored three excellent goals.

"Defensively we were solid and comfortable, but at the same time to concede two goals in the fashion we did was again disappointing.

"As always there are lots of positives to take and improvements to come, especially as this year is a young group, particularly with Sam Heal, Joe Budd & Kinsly Murray permanent fixtures in the Development Squad, which is terrific for everyone.

"It's great for those individuals and their personal development, but at the same time it pushes the rest of the group to be better and means more game time for the first years and in some cases the U16's.

"The standout performer on the day was Matt Reed who caught the eye with 3 assists and an energetic and lively performance upfront."
