Alfie Kilgour Agrees New Deal

4 July 2020

The Club is delighted to announce that Alfie Kilgour has agreed a new contract.

The highly-rated 22-year-old extends his stay at the Memorial Stadium until 2023.

The defender, who is a product of the Club's Academy system, has impressed this season after making a breakthrough into the first-team.

The centre-back gained valuable first-team experience through a series of loans spells in his early career. He began his loan stints with local side Mangotsfield United, and also featured for Cirencester Town and Hungerford Town.

It was a spell on loan at Maidenhead United in the Vanarama National League during the 2018/19 season that caught the eye, as his 18 appearances and three goals for the Magpies proved that he was ready to make the step up to feature for Rovers in the EFL.

The defender was recalled to the Mem in March 2019 and was drafted into the first-team squad, making his debut as a late substitute in a win at Gillingham.

The young defender made his first Gas start 11 days later, playing the entirety of our dramatic 2-2 draw at Home Park, drawing plaudits for his performances in a frantic game against Plymouth Argyle.

The 2019/20 season was a standout point in the defender's progression, as he featured over 45 times throughout the campaign.

Kilgour scored his first Rovers goal in the EFL Trophy against Leyton Orient and scored three times across the season, with his long-range strike against Blackpool earning the defender the accolade of the Sky Bet League One Goal of the Month award.

Speaking about the defender committing his future to Rovers, Manager Ben Garner said, "We are delighted that Alfie has agreed a new deal.

"He is a local lad who loves the football club. As someone that has progressed through the Academy, he knows what it means to represent Bristol Rovers and that is evident every time he steps onto the pitch. It is very important that we develop our own players and maintain that strong bond with the supporters.

"Alfie has both the quality and the character required to have a very successful career. I love working with him and he’s a fantastic role model for every young player in our Academy.”

Alfie added, "I'm very happy to be extending my stay at a club that means a great deal to both myself and my family.

"I have enjoyed my transition into the first-team and I understand the focus and desire that I will need to apply to continue to progress.

"I want to thank Ben for showing his faith in me this season and I'm looking forward to representing the blue and white quarters once again when the new campaign gets underway."
