Match Preview: Fleetwood Town v Bristol Rovers

28 December 2019

We take a look at all the need to know info ahead of Sunday's encounter with Fleetwood Town.

Rovers head to Fleetwood for the final fixture of 2019, looking to bounce back from a narrow Boxing Day defeat at the hands of AFC Wimbledon.

Rovers have been in great form on the road of late, picking up five wins on the spin in all competitions away from the Mem.

A long trip to Highbury is next on the agenda in the busy run of festive fixtures, with Rovers looking to end the year on a high at Highbury.

Manager's Preview: Rovers boss Ben Garner addressed the desire to put right Thursday's defeat on Sunday in his post-match interview after Boxing Day.

Opposition: Fleetwood sit in 7th spot in Sky Bet League One and currently lead the chasing pack for a play-off place, as they sit just one place and one point behind Rovers heading into Sunday's full schedule of league fixtures. A late Wes Burns goal gave the Cod Army a dramatic late win at Rochdale on Boxing Day, which was their first win in December. Paddy Madden is certainly the man to watch for Joey Barton's side, with the striker already totalling 17 goals this term.

Press Talk: Speaking after his sides frantic festive win at Rochdale, Fleetwood Town boss Joey Barton cast his attention to their upcoming clash with Rovers. Barton told fleetwoodtownfc.co.uk, "We are heading into a recovery phase now. This is probably the busiest part of the season with the fixture build up, but the lads know that our Christmas and New Year isn’t until the end of the season. It would be nice to finish off the year on a high with a win against Bristol Rovers. Our fans deserve it – we know it will be a tough fixture. I know they [Bristol Rovers] have changed manager, and Graham [Coughlan] did a good job there, but we know the new guy will come in and get them organised.”

Last Encounter: Our 0-0 draw at Highbury back in April was memorable due to the fact that point was enough to secure our Sky Bet League One status, with the game having few chances. Recent encounters against Fleetwood that stick in the memory are the 2-1 win at the Mem back in December 2018, where a late James Clarke goal sparked great scenes of celebration at BS7.
