Central League Report: Bristol Rovers Development Squad 1-0 Cheltenham Town U23's

18 September 2018

The Development Squad recorded an impressive victory in the Central League against Cheltenham Town at Lodge Road - with Cameron Allen scoring the only goal of the game.

Deon Moore created a number of opportunities during the first half for both himself and his team mates, but Rovers couldn't turn their chances into goals during the opening forty-five minutes.

The striker was on hand to turn provider in the second half, as the forward picked out Cameron Allen who fired home the only goal of the fixture to allow the Development Squad to chalk back-to-back victories in the Central League.

The starting XI for Chris Hargreaves' side integrated a number of U18's into the fray for the second round of Central League fixtures.

Scott Isherwood and Josh Bailey were listed as part of a Rovers back-four, while the bench was entirely made up of U18's.

Following a competitive opening spell of the encounter, it was Rovers who crafted the first opportunity of the contest. The move was instigated by good play down the left-wing from Deon Moore, as the striker outmuscled a defender to break into the Cheltenham box. Moore kept his composure to pick out of the unmarked Lewis Leigh-Gilchrist, as the creative midfielder curled a right footed attempt wide of the goal.

The combination of Moore and Leigh-Gilchrist seemed to be a useful partnership during the first half, as the pair again combined to create a further chance shortly after. On this occasion, Leigh-Gilchrist's shot from sixteen yards looked set to find the target but was deflected clear in front of the goal frame.

With the first half edging closer to break, Moore had a chance on goal for himself. The striker was picked out with a well-timed ball forward by Theo Widdrington, as the striker held off the challenge of Ben Tozer to break towards goal. Holding his balance as he pushed closer to goal,  Moore managed to get a powerful effort away, but the shot was pushed clear by the Cheltenham goalkeeper.

Moore continued to pose a threat in the second half, as the striker battled well in an aerial duo to open up the opportunity to once again break into the final third. With a view towards goal narrowing, Moore hit a right-footed shot that kept low and had to be claimed by Lovett at the near post.

With the game opening up as the second half progressed, both teams enjoyed more clear-cut chances on goal. A well-directed shot from twenty yards from Lewis Leigh-Gilchrist forced Lovett into making a save - as George Lloyd headed wide from a corner at the other end.

As the encounter stretched into the final twenty-five minutes, the deadlock in the contest was broken by Chris Hargreaves' men. The move was started by the impressive Deon Moore, who picked out Cameron Allen inside the area, with the striker making no mistake with finding the target from close range.

With a goal advantage, Rovers had quickfire opportunities to race further ahead. Cameron Hargreaves had a long-range effort tipped over the crossbar by Lovett, while Ben Morgan forced the Cheltenham 'keeper into making an impressive save from the resulting corner.

Rovers: Alexis Andre-Jr, Scott Isherwood, Josh Bailey, Ben Morgan, Alfie Clarke, Cameron Hargreaves, Theo Widdrington, Connor Jones, Lewis Leigh-Gilchrist, Cameron Allen, Deon Moore.
