Southmead Project Chosen as Club's Charity Partner

22 October 2018

Following the recent application process for two charity partners for the 2018/19 season, the Club is delighted to announce the appointment of Southmead project as our first charity partner of the season.

Southmead Project is a registered charity providing free therapeutic and practical support to adults who were abused as children and have turned to drugs, alcohol and other ways of self-harming as a consequence of that trauma.

Throughout the season the club will be working with the charity to help raise awareness of their work and funds to help them continue the great work that they do.

This partnership will be vital in ensuring that they can continue to provide help and support to those that need it most.

One of the victims helped by the project said “I came to Southmead Project for help to stop my longing for drugs to numb my pain, but what really began my healing was being able to express some of my pain to other human beings who didn't crumple at the horror of what I had experienced as a child”

Mike Pierce founder of the Southmead project said “This statement from one of the hundreds of people we have supported over the years sums up the extremely difficult position a victim of child abuse finds themselves in. Many will harm themselves when trying to find ways to suppress the emotional turmoil child abuse brings with it.

At Southmead Project we provide the necessary support for victims and survivors of child abuse to heal their emotional wounds, enabling them to overcome the post-traumatic stress disorder that has developed because of the trauma they had experienced.

The decision of Bristol Rovers to support us in our work is an enormous step forward in acknowledging the extent of child abuse in our city, and the enormous problems this brings to the individual, and the family concerned. The club has stood up to be counted as befits its sense of fair play and community spirit: openly proclaiming its decision to come down on the side of those who have had the misfortune to become innocent victims of appalling circumstance as children.

This example of human kindness, compassion and commitment so clearly demonstrated by Bristol Rovers is a credit to all concerned. By their actions, the club will not only be helping to raise money for us to carry out our work but will be giving a voice to those who have been silenced for so long.”
