In the first part of an extended chat with the goalkeeper, Sam talks us through his thoughts after the conclusion of his first season at the Club and the importance of the strong spirit within the dressing room.
"It's been quite a tough season, but I wasn't expecting anything different," outlined the goalkeeper.
"In this league, it's very tough and you kind of have six teams that are ahead of the rest, but you have seen from teams like Shrewsbury this season, that if you are able to pull off results at the right time, then you are able to get yourself in the mix."
"It has been a season of near misses for us. I know the gaffer has mentioned that nearly word quite a lot. We have got close to the playoffs, but then haven't been able to pick up the results to get into the top six."
"We have been leading in games, then ended up drawing and we have played in tough games where we have played well and ended up being defeated by a late goal. Those results can really hurt a dressing room, but I quickly came to realise after arriving at the Club that the spirit in the dressing room is fantastic and we have been able to bounce back quickly from those games."
Looking back on his arrival at the Club, Sam recalls memories of arriving to sign on the same day as his teammate Adam Smith and lends his thoughts regarding the healthy competition for places between the sticks.
"Signing on the same day was a bit of surprise for me and I'm sure it was to Adam as well, but it has been a good relationship throughout the year," addressed Sam.
"Smudge (Adam Smtih) is a very good goalkeeper and he has a couple of years on me and he's a good character to have around the dressing room."
"It makes it tough in the sense of competition, but it also brings out the best in you both, as you know that if you're not at your game then you know someone else will be."
With a full season under his belt, in which both goalkeepers made the exact same number of experiences, Sam is now fully aware of the correlations between Manager Darrell Clarke's style of play and the spirit of togetherness in the dressing room.
"The way the gaffer manages and looks to play, it enforces that spirit within the club."
"He wants to win the game no matter what and he will make changes after twenty minutes if he has to if he feels that things aren't working out."
"I think that way we play, especially at home, we are able to finish games strongly and the Manager is willing to throw caution to the wind in order to get the win."
"That breeds that 'never say die attitude' within the club and we have shown that throughout the season."
