14 June 2018

With the FIFA World Cup starting today - we explore links between Rovers and Uruguay.

Uruguay are competing in their thirteenth World Cup Finals, having been champions in 1930 and 1950.

The Opponents

When Rovers and Brighton drew in April 2010, the opposition brought on Diego Arismendi as a last minute substitute.

Born in Montevideo in January 1988, Arismendi had played 55 times for Nacional, scoring twice and he won four full caps before returning for a further 56 games and eight goals for Nacional between 2013 and 2015, when he moved to Saudi Arabia.

Mateo Corbo, who was born in Montevideo in April 1976, was in the Oxford United side which faced Rovers in January 2005, before furthering his career in Australia, Spain and Paraguay.

The Opposition Manager

Following an illustrious career in France, Spain and England, Gus Poyet was on the coaching staff of the Leeds United side which played Rovers in League One and was manager when Brighton drew 1-1 at The Mem in April 2010.

Born in Montevideo in November 1967, he won 26 full caps for Uruguay and scored three goals, playing for the Uruguayan side River Plate in the 1989/90 season.

The Uruguayan International

When Rovers faced Hull City in a pre-season friendly in July 2017, the Tigers fielded Uruguayan international Abel Hernández.

Born in Pando in August 1990, he started his career with Peñarol, scoring three times in eight games in 2008/09 and has since accumulated 27 full caps and 11 goals for Uruguay.
