Five Things We Learnt From Darrell Clarke's Presser

1 February 2018

Darrell Clarke covered various topics when he addressed the local media on Thursday afternoon and we've highlighted five key points.

January business...

"I'm happy with the business we have done and the three players I've brought in are all different players which adds more balance and more options to the squad.

"I thought we were lacking a bit of experience in the changing rooms and Tony [Craig] will certainly bring us that.

"We've also got to bear in mind his family lives 20 minutes from Millwall, they offered him another year but he wants to come and play and be a part of our project which is fantastic.

"Kyle's [Bennett] a lad I have admired for a long time; a deal for him fell through earlier in the window but it's nice a bit of patience has paid off and really pleased to get it over the line."

Experience...

"We lost a lot of experience lads in the summer who had good careers and I just felt we've lacked that a little bit at times this season, certainly when you're on a bit of a dip.

"With Tony [Craig] coming from Millwall and the success he's had, he's certainly not going to be mentally weak and he's certainly going to be what I think is required in my back line as well.

"Kyle [Bennett] is an experience lad too who knows the leagues so he will no doubt add to that in the dressing room."

Shrewsbury Town...

"Paul Hurst is probably the manager of the season so far isn't he and Shrewsbury are one of the teams that are massively overachieving, doing great and a really tough side to beat.

"He's got a good squad there so fair play to him and an impressive away record so it'll be a tough test."

The fans...

"Our fans are well up for it - you've only got to look at our attendances and how well we're supported up and down the country.

"The majority of our fanbase is very realistic about where we are as a club at the moment, I think they're enjoying the season so far and they want to see as winning."

Width and formation...

"Our data shows we get a lot of crosses in the box, I know a lot of people like the old style 4-4-2 but the game has moved on, full-backs provide a lot of your width and we're flexible within our squad.

"We've got different options to get into wider areas and we have no got the option of wide players coming inside the pitch and allowing the full-backs around the outside, we've got the option of the diamond, 3-4-3 and I'm a manager that likes plenty of options."
