Marcus' Five Point Preview

26 April 2018

We pinpoint the main talking points from today's pre-match press conference with Assistant Manager, Marcus Stewart.

It was Marcus Stewart's turn to face the media on Thursday lunchtime, as the Rovers Assistant Manager covered a wide range of topics ahead of the final home league game of the season against Gillingham.

We have highlighted five main topics from what Marcus said during his pre-match press conference.

LIAM SERCOMBE...

The midfielder picked up a duo of awards at last night's end of season awards event, as Marcus outlined that Liam's game has a further element to it that often goes unnoticed.

"Liam has shown a lot of his strengths through scoring goals, but he has much more to his game than just that."

"He has a fantastic work rate and wants to run past people both with and without the ball and will also get back and defend."

"He does a lot of the ugly side of the game, that people don't always see but not only that, he's popular amongst the other lads in the dressing room."

LEE BROWN...

Saturday's fixture is set to be an emotional occasion, as the Rovers faithful are set to show their appreciation to defender Lee Brown, who will his final game in the blue and white quarters this weekend.

"When I first came into the club, both Lee Brown and Michael Smith weren't really playing a lot and sometimes they played under me for the reserves as it was then."

"I have got a lot of history with Lee and all that history is positive."

"I'm going to be biased, but for me, Lee is one of the most important players that the club has had in its history, in terms of the kind of attitude he had to show to help get this club back on track."

ON RECRUITMENT...

Following on from the glowing reference of Lee Brown's commitment to the Club, Marcus progressed to explain the importance of having personnel in the dressing room that share the defender's attitude towards the game going forward.

"Lee is just a model pro in the way he goes about his business. He very rarely misses training and if he does ever miss training, then you know something must be wrong."

"Those sort of players are very important to this club, so we will miss that kind of influence and attitude, as it tends to rub off on one or two of the other players in the group."

"If we get the right person in, that kind of attitude has to be paramount."

GILLINGHAM...

Marcus shared his thoughts on Saturday's opponents, alluding to the fact that Gillingham aren't yet mathematically safe from relegation and will be fighting for a result on Saturday.

"They aren't mathematically out of trouble and they will be looking to get a result to make sure that they don't go into the final game with that pressure."

"They will be coming here looking to get a win or a point to relieve that pressure."

"We have to take Tuesday's performance against Wigan into Saturday's game."

NEXT SEASON...

Shifting attention to next season, Marcus explained the importance of maintaining progress.

"We are always trying to evolve this club. If that means players coming and players going, then that is what football is all about."

"We would like to keep the core element of this group of lads because we feel that they will be able to pass the qualities of what it takes to represent this football club to any new players coming in."

"We need to get four or five players in that will fit into our mentality."
