Getting to Know: Gillingham

Take a look at our opponents next season in SkyBet League One.

16 June 2017

We take a look at Gillingham ahead of the start of the 2017/18 campaign.

Team Nickname: Gills

Home Ground: Priestfield Stadium

Distance from the Mem: 171 miles (342-mile round trip)

Manager: Pennock needed little introduction to Gills fans upon his appointment as head coach on January 4, 2017, having played 199 times for the club.

He was appointed Manager of Conference Premier side Forest Green Rovers in November 2013; after guiding them to tenth at the end of his first season in charge, Pennock led the Gloucestershire-based club to their best-ever finishes of fifth and second at the end of the 2014/15 and 2015/16 campaigns respectively.

Most recently, Pennock served as a consultant to Jamie Day at Welling United, a role he started in November 2016.

Last Season: Pennock's side narrowly avoided relegation finishing the season in 20th position with 50 points from their 46 games. With their last win of the season coming against Rovers on the 14th April.

Last Encounter: Rovers suffered a 3-1 defeat at Priestfield thanks to two injury-time goals from Cody McDonald after Billy Bodin pulled Rovers level from the spot to cancel out Josh Wright's second half opener.

New Recruits: Gillingham have been very active in the transfer market so far bringing in four players to bolster their squad ahead of the new season. Josh Parker, Gabriel Zakuani, Luke O'Neill and Alex Lacey have already put pen to paper with the Gills.

SkyBet Odds: League sponsors SkyBet offer odds of 50/1 on Gillingham being crowned champions come May 2018 and offer odds of 11/8 for Pennock's men to be relegated.
