Getting to Know: Charlton Athletic

Take a look at our opponents next season in SkyBet League One.

13 June 2017

We take a look at Charlton Athletic ahead of the start of the 2017/18 campaign.

Team Nickname: The Addicks

Home Ground: The Valley

Distance from the Mem: 166 miles (332-mile round trip)

Manager: Manager Karl Robinson was appointed by Charlton in November 2016.

The highly-rated 36-year-old, who led Milton Keynes Dons to automatic promotion to the Sky Bet Championship 18 months ago, signed a two-and-a-half-year contract at The Valley. Prior to commencing his role with MK Dons in 2010, Robinson coached at Liverpool’s Academy before taking on a role with Blackburn Rovers’ first team.

During more than six years at Stadium MK, he led the team to successive fifth-place finishes, before securing second place and promotion to the Championship for the first time in the club’s history in 2014/15.

Last Season: Many Addicks supporters would agree that their side underperformed last season finishing in 13th position in the SkyBet League One table. Karl Robinson has already cut short his players summer short enforcing early pre-season testing as they will be making a serious push for promotion this coming season.

Last Encounter: Rovers struggled in both fixtures against Charlton and last time out even though Jermaine Easter opened the scoring at the Valley Josh Magennis scored an impressive hat-trick with the home side running out 4-1 winners to kick off 2017.

New Recruits: Charlton have only added one player to their ranks for the 2017/18 season, bringing in Billy Clarke from Bradford City for an undisclosed fee. Clarke played 40 times last term - scoring seven goals and grabbing five assists - as the Bantams reached the League One play-offs for a second successive year.

SkyBet Odds: League sponsors SkyBet offer odds of 16/1 on the Addicks being crowned champions come May 2018 and offer odds of 9/4 for Karl Robinson's men to finish inside the top six.
