Three to Watch: Doncaster Rovers

21 December 2017

Doncaster Rovers are the visitors to the Memorial Stadium this coming Saturday.

Since returning to SkyBet League One at their first attempt, Doncaster Rovers have enjoyed a sporadic return of form over the opening half of the season, achieving a points tally of twenty-four in the first twenty-two games.

Darren Ferguson's side set a good early pace in the season, beating both Bradford and Hull in consecutive games, as the South Yorkshire outfit also claimed the scalp of Hull in the EFL Cup.

In recent games, Doncaster have started to edge away from the bottom four, drawing two, winning two and losing just once in their last five outings.

Sitting in 18th position, Darren Ferguson will be looking to extend the three-point gap that his side currently have on the relegation places in the New Year.

Take a look below at the players to look out for in Saturday's encounter at the Mem.

John Marquis - Striker

The twenty-five-year-old striker is the top scorer for Doncaster this season, with seven goals in all competitions this term.

The 6'1 striker is a former employee of clubs including Millwall, Portsmouth, Northampton, Cheltenham and Gillingham and joined Doncaster in June 2016.

Since his arrival at the Keepmoat Stadium, in the striker impressed in his first season, scoring twenty-seven goals in total as Doncaster won promotion to SkyBet League One and collected the tally of seven goals in five outings during the early months of 2016, helping Doncaster remain unbeaten in January.

This season the striker has scored on a consistent basis, opening his account for this season with a strike in Doncaster's early season win at Blackburn.

Marquis' last goal came in during a 2-1 victory over MK Dons, as the striker helped Doncaster come from behind to claim all three points.

Ben Whiteman - Midfield

Currently on loan from Doncaster's Yorkshire neighbours, Sheffield United, Ben Whiteman has made quite the impression during his spell at the Keepmoat.

The 21-year-old ended last season on loan with League Two side Mansfield, scoring seven goals in 23 appearances and in the summer, the midfielder made the switch to join Doncaster on loan in July, originally on a six-month loan agreement.

Whiteman scored an 87th-minute winning goal in Doncaster EFL Cup victory over Bradford to open his account for the club, with midfielder scoring a hat-trick during Rovers' defeat of Southend, as well as firing home the only goal of the game in Doncaster's narrow 1-0 victory over Bury.

In recent weeks Doncaster boss Darren Furguson has made it clear that he wishes to extend Whiteman's loan beyond January.

Alfie May - Striker

A former non-league footballer, striker Alfie May joined Doncaster from Bromley in January 2017 and impressed during his transition into the EFL.

The striker tallied three goals between his arrival in January and the end of the season and started this current season in a fine run of form that saw the striker score in four consecutive outings.

The striker was ruled out through injury for two months back in October and returned to the matchday squad for the Doncaster's visit to Oxford United at the beginning of December, which was a welcome boost to Manager Darren Furguson, who saw striker Andy Williams sidelined in November with an ankle injury.
