UNDER-18'S BEAT CAMBRIDGE

27 March 2015

Bristol Rovers 1-0 Cambridge United

Thursday 26th March 2015

Blake Davies was on target yet again for our U-18 side in this hard fought, but well deserved, victory against Cambridge United yesterday afternoon.

The win means that Alan Walsh's side remain undefeated in their Merit League Two fixtures and the Youth Team Manager had this to say afterwards; "In the first half I thought we created the better chances, while the main threat Cambridge posed was from set pieces. However they almost nicked a goal just before the break, following a goalmouth scramble, but goalkeeper Kieran Preston came to our rescue.

"We had two very good chances, from a Blake Davies header and a shot from Laurent Davis-Wilson, but both were saved by the visiting goalkeeper. Had we shown a little more composure with one or two other opportunities then we might have gone in with a half time lead.

"At the break I told the boys that they had done OK, but stressed that wasn't good enough and that they needed to up their game in the second half.

"To their credit they did improve and although Cambridge still posed a threat, with a strong wind behind them, we dealt with it and I don't recall them having a chance.

"We created two or three chances ourselves and Tom Fry was unlucky not to score when the Cambridge goalkeeper made a point blank save from his close range header.

"We eventually scored what turned out to be the only goal of the game after 77 minutes when Tom played the ball in to Laurent, who held it up well before finding Blake with a measured pass.

"Blake hit a left foot shot across the goalkeeper for an excellent goal and although Cambridge did launch more balls into our box in the closing stages, we held out for a deserved win and a clean sheet from a game played in very difficult conditions.
