TOM LOCKYER SIGNS CONTRACT EXTENSION

17 March 2014

Youngster signs on until summer 2016

Bristol Rovers are delighted to announce that Tom Lockyer has signed a contract extension that will keep him at the club until the summer of 2016.

The versatile youngster, who can play in a number of positions, has been one of the stand out players for Rovers this season.

After being a part of our successful youth team who last season won the League and Cup double, he has graduated to the first team and established himself in the starting XI.

Manager John Ward said: “When I first came here I put Tom on as a substitute on the left wing against Fleetwood.

“The more I saw him in the youth team, the more I realised we had a good player on our hands.

“And the more I saw of him this season I have realised his best position was in midfield, although his flexibility is a fantastic bonus for a club like ours.

“Tom is a great example for other young players coming through the ranks. He is proof that if you work hard there are opportunities for you at this club.

“Tom has a really good future ahead of him, and I am really pleased he has signed this contract extension.”

The Cardiff born youngster was released by his hometown club after spending time on their books as a schoolboy, and joined Rovers on a two year scholarship in the summer of 2011.

Tom, 19, was on the bench for the first team on a number of occasions last season, when still a second year scholar, and made his senior debut when going on as a late substitute in our 3-0 win at Fleetwood on 12th January 2013.

He ended the season with four substitute appearances to his name and signed his first professional contract in the summer of 2013.

Chairman Nick Higgs said: “We are delighted that Tom has committed his future to Bristol Rovers.

“He has graduated through our youth team and become an integral part of our first team side this season.

“Despite being just 18 years old he is able to command his midfield and he plays with an understanding and knowledge well beyond his years.

“We expect really exciting things for Tom in the future.”
