DARRELL - SATURDAY WAS A WAKE-UP CALL

19 August 2014

We caught up with the manager at today's official photo shoot

Darrell Clarke believes that Saturday’s result was a wake-up call for some of his players.

He said: “We have to put last week to bed quickly, and make sure that lessons have been learnt, because Saturday’s performance was unacceptable.

“Supporters want to see action, they don’t want to see me talking - they want to see points on the pitch.

“It is all about looking forward and making sure we are bang at it on Saturday.

“Saturday was a massive wake-up call, as I think two or three players from last season had their head’s up their backside and didn’t know what to expect.

“What ever team we play at this level, we are going to be their cup final and we have to deal with that.

“The players have got to mentally get their head around it to be able to move it forward.

“I believe on Saturday it was fear of making a mistake, and Altrincham’s best attacks were created by us.

“This club, with the fan base, should be fighting at the top of League One trying to get in the Championship, but we are in the Conference on merit.

“This is why Luton took five or six years to get out of it, we are in the Conference and we have to get our heads around it. We deserve to be here – what are we going to do about it?”

And the manager believes that his players need to be more switched on in both boxes.

He said: “We have created a lot of chances, but it is frustrating that we are not taking them.

“We have to improve that area of our play and we have to stop conceding sloppy goals.

“It is all about both boxes – we will be a team who create chances, we have got to stick them away and we also have to make sure we don’t give suicide goals away.”

And Darrell says that he is definitely the man for the job.

He said: “I wouldn’t be sat here if I didn’t think I was the right man for the job.

“I am the right man for the job. I have to prove I am the right man for the job.

“Every minute of the day I am thinking about how we can improve our football club, to make sure we are successful on the pitch.”
