Ascot Report

Bristol Rovers Women kicked off their National League South West Division campaign in style with a 1-0 victory over newly promoted Ascot United Women at the Memorial Ground.

It was a game of true fine margins, with the hosts enduring periods of early pressure before breaking through with a moment of magic from Maisy Collis in the 75th minute. The win provided the perfect start to life back at the Mem, underlining the team’s readiness for the challenges of the new season.

Ascot United began the contest with intent, testing Rovers’ defence and goalkeeper George Hunt in the opening minutes. The visitors carved out the first clear opportunity inside three minutes, only for Hunt to produce a vital save, before Ascot spurned the rebound from close range. This early pressure served to galvanise the hosts, who quickly began to grow into the game and impose themselves on proceedings.

Bristol Rovers responded with growing authority as the half progressed. Meg Jarvis came close on several occasions, her volleys and clever runs stretching the visiting defence, but were denied by both defensive interventions and fine goalkeeping.

On the half-hour mark, Darcey Maxted and Erin Huntley combined to snuff out a dangerous Ascot attack, showcasing the organisation and resilience of the Rovers backline. As the half drew to a close, Chloe Gilroy’s free-kick created a near opportunity for TJ Gauvain, whose header skimmed over the bar.

Despite creating fewer chances than the visitors, Rovers maintained a disciplined defensive structure and went into the break level, ready to assert themselves in the second half.

The second half saw Rovers take more control, balancing patient build-up play with threatening forays into the Ascot penalty area. Hunt remained a constant presence between the posts, making key interventions to keep the visitors at bay and ensure her side’s clean sheet remained intact.

The breakthrough came in the 75th minute in spectacular fashion. Maisy Collis picked up the ball from distance and unleashed a powerful, unstoppable strike into the top corner, providing a perfectly timed moment of brilliance to break the deadlock.

The drama continued shortly after the goal. The Yellawomen responded immediately, with substitute Dani Dias meeting a cross with a first-time volley from close range. Hunt, however, produced a remarkable reflex save, diving low to her right and clawing the ball away, demonstrating both agility and composure under pressure.

Despite a testing start, the Gas Girls showed resilience, composure, and a collective spirit that proved decisive in the closing stages.

With all three points secured on the opening day, Rovers now have momentum and confidence as they look ahead to the challenges of the National League season.
