Rovers narrowly beaten by Bromley

MATCH REPORT

Bromley 1-0 Bristol Rovers
Sky Bet League Two, The CopperJax Community Stadium, Saturday 14 March 2026

Bristol Rovers fell to a narrow 1-0 loss to Sky Bet League leaders Bromley at the CopperJax Community Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The match began with Rovers’ defence being tested frequently, although the Pirates still had their fair share of chances going forward. The breakthrough came when Ravens found the net through Will Hondermarck, leaving the Gas trailing as the first half drew to a close and as the match moved into the second period.

Last Saturday, against Crewe, Steve Evans made a triple change at the start of the second half, which paid off when Tommy Leigh scored a brace to turn the score around and seal the victory for Rovers.

Looking to repeat that impact, Steve Evans introduced Shaq Forde, Yusuf Akhamrich, and Joe Quigley at the break in hopes of sparking a comeback. However, a big opportunity for Quigley saw his effort fly over the crossbar, and Forde was later shown a red card in a tight defeat for the Gas.

The Pirates made three changes to the team that beat Barrow on Tuesday night. Tom Lockyer, Ryan de Havilland and Mees Rijks started, with the last of the trio making his first start in the blue-and-white quarters.

As the game opened, early pressure came from Bromley at the attacking end, forcing two corners that were safely dealt with by Brad Young. Rovers soon had a chance of their own when Jack Sparkes got down the left and laid the ball off to Ellis Harrison. He cut the ball across the box, but Bromley’s defence reacted quickly to clear the threat.

Bromley then regained possession and drove forward towards the goal, but Rovers defended well to prevent any clear-cut opportunity from developing. Clinton Mola continued the strong defensive work, blocking a dangerous ball just outside the box.

Another Bromley opportunity came following a throw-in, though the delivery was met with a strike that sailed too high to trouble the defence. Moments later, they tried their luck from long range, but Young collected comfortably. Mola again produced a brilliant defensive intervention, knocking the ball away from goal at a crucial moment.

The hosts, who are unbeaten at home in the fourth tier, grew into the contest and broke the deadlock after 18 minutes. After excellent build-up play from Marcus Ifill and Corey Whitley, a perfect cross found the feet of Hondermarck, who fired his strike into the back of the net.

The Gas pushed for an equaliser with a chance from Ryan De Havilland, who delivered a cross towards Harrison. The striker attempted to head the ball home, but Grant Smith comfortably caught his flicked attempt.

Fabrizio Cavegn and Rijks continued to search for a goal with shots in quick succession. Cavegn's initial attempt was blocked, but he regained possession and passed the ball to Mees, whose shot was on target but again collected by the goalkeeper.

The second half began with a treble change and at a quick tempo. Bromley raced forward but struggled to get a decisive touch in the box, and instead of squaring the ball to double their lead, the effort was sent high over the bar. Following a free kick, Young did well to stretch his foot and knock the ball away and deny Whitley’s effort, before another Bromley shot in quick succession was cleared off the line.

Rovers began to grow into the game, with the substitutes trying to make an impact. Kane Thompson-Sommers cut inside but was unable to get a clean strike away. Forde showed well adept skill on the ball but could not break through the Bromley defence.

The Gas kept the pressure in the attacking third, with chances created by Mola and Akhamrich as Rovers worked for an equaliser but were unable to find the finishing touch. A clear-cut chance was created as Joel Senior delivered a skilful cross into the box for Quigley. However, his effort flew over the crossbar, eradicating a golden opportunity for the Gas.

Rovers’ task became even more difficult when Forde was shown a second yellow card and sent off, leaving Evans’ side to finish the match with ten men while still trailing. As the match entered the final stages, the game became end-to-end, with the Gas pushing forward during four minutes of added time. Despite their determination, they were unable to make it on the scoresheet, and the final whistle confirmed a 1–0 defeat.
