Quigley heads in Rovers winner against Fleetwood

MATCH REPORT

Joe Quigley struck in the second half to help Bristol Rovers secure another three points with a 1–0 victory over Fleetwood Town at The Memorial Stadium.

The Gas ran out in front of over 10,000 loyal Gasheads and made it seven wins from their last eight outings at home.

A first-half penalty save from Brad Young was the standout moment of a goalless opening 45 minutes, getting down well to his right to push away Ethan Ennis' penalty.

After the break, Rovers found their breakthrough. Steve Evans' second-half substitution made an immediate impact, with Quigley getting on the end of Jack Sparkes corner from the right and flicking a header past Jay Lynch.

The first half began at a high pace, though the opening minutes produced few clear-cut chances from either side. As the game progressed, Richie Smallwood took a free-kick quickly, but the delivery was carried too far by the wind. Rovers threatened soon after, getting the ball into a dangerous area, but were unable to apply the decisive touch.

Despite the limited action, the Gas looked the more promising of the two sides. Fleetwood Town had a spell in the attacking third following a brief stoppage for an injury to Kofi Balmer, but they struggled to break through a solid Rovers defence.

The Pirates showed good composure in possession, building play well. Shaq Forde displayed neat footwork before linking up with Smallwood, who drove the ball towards the box and found Ellis Harrison, but his effort was blocked and cleared wide.

Kofi Balmer’s long throws caused problems, with one delivery clearing as far as Shaq Forde on the edge of the area, though his shot sailed over the bar. Another long throw soon followed, finding Riley Harbottle following a scramble in the box, but once again the effort went high and failed to trouble the goalkeeper.

Rovers continued to push forward, with Jack Sparkes winning possession and driving down the wing. His perfect cross found Shaq Forde, who skipped over a tackle and delivered towards Ellis Harrison, but his strike skimmed past the outside of the post.

Fleetwood were handed a major opportunity when Will Davies went down in the box under a challenge from Kofi Balmer, resulting in a penalty after a brief confrontation between the sides. However, Brad Young produced a crucial save to deny Fleetwood's Ennis, sparking a huge reaction from the 10,000-plus Gas supporters.

Steve Evans began the second half with a single substitution, replacing Clinton Mola with Ryan De Havilland, as Rovers looked to build on their first-half performance.

Fleetwood started the brighter of the two sides after the restart, coming close twice in the opening minutes and showing greater attacking intent. Evans responded by making an early triple substitution, welcoming Yusuf Akhamrich, Tommy Leigh, and Quigley in an effort to find a breakthrough, and the changes soon had an impact.

After a free kick from Yusuf Akhamarich was sent too high and out for a corner, Sparkes delivered an excellent ball into the box. The ball met Joe Quigley, and he headed the ball across the goal and into the net to give Rovers the lead.

Fleetwood Town pushed forward in response, creating a spell of pressure in the Rovers defensive third, but Young and his defence stood firm to deny an equaliser. Akhamrich then made a driving run through the visitors' defence, but his effort was off target and comfortably collected by the goalkeeper. Shortly after, Forde was replaced by Kane Thompson-Sommers, who made an immediate impact by battling past defenders and setting up a chance, only for the referee to halt play before the hosts could get a shot away.
