Swindon Town Preview

Swindon Town v Bristol Rovers
Sky Bet League Two, The Nigel Eady County Ground, Saturday 28 February 2026, 12:30pm KO

Bristol Rovers will be looking to claim back-to-back wins in Sky Bet League Two when they travel to Swindon Town for Saturday's early kick-off.

The Pirates enjoyed an outstanding 3-1 victory over Grimsby Town, claiming their third victory in four outings at The Memorial Stadium. The Mariners entered the contest unbeaten in ten games and boasting an impressive record of four consecutive away clean sheets, but conceded twice in the early stages of the match.

Kofi Balmer struck a volley into the bottom right corner to give Steve Evans' men the lead before Joe Quigley finished low past Jackson Smith to get Rovers' second. Andy Cook got one back for the visitors before the break, but Yusuf Akhamrich got Rovers' third to seal the victory. The Pirates will now attempt to claim their first away victory since New Year's Day, where Fabrizio Cavegn's second-half hat-trick helped the Gas beat Shrewsbury Town.

Swindon lost 2-1 at home to Crewe Alexandra in their previous outing, with Michael Olakigbe's second-half strike for the Robins proving to be a consolation after efforts from Matus Holicek and Josh March.

Opposition…

Swindon are playing in Sky Bet League Two for the fifth straight season after being relegated from the third tier in the 2020/21 campaign, but are one of the main promotion contenders this term.

The Robins are fifth in the table, but have shown they could end the campaign in one of the three automatic promotion spots. Ian Holloway's men were second in the standings after a 2-0 victory over Newport County earlier this month, but have since dropped to fifth after two defeats in three games.

Swindon might see their losses to Shrewsbury Town and Crewe as missed opportunities, as four points from those two games would have seen them go level on points with league leaders Bromley, and maximum points would have put them right at the top. Still, they are on 61 points alongside three other teams, including Milton Keynes Dons, who are in the final automatic promotion spot.

Swindon made sure to strengthen in the January transfer window to bolster their chances of promotion. James Scanlon and Michael Olakigbe moved on loan from Manchester United and Brentford, respectively, with Fletcher Holman, Ben Middlemas and Aidan Borland also switching to the Robins temporarily from Premier League outfits.

Junior Hoilett, who has played 266 times in the Championship and 161 times in the Premier League, transferred from Hibernian, with Jake Batty also going to Swindon, this time from Blackburn Rovers.

Previous Meetings…

Rovers have had a tough time against Swindon, only winning two of their last meetings with the Robins, stretching back to 2017. In fact, the Gas last beat Swindon in the league in the 2016/17 campaign, where they completed the double over them.

The Pirates scored two goals in two minutes to complete a late comeback and win 2-1 on the road, with Matty Taylor netting a penalty and Rapha Branco scoring an own goal, before a 1-0 victory at The Mem, where Billy Bodin bagged the only goal.

Swindon's last home league win against the Gas came in 2020, with Brett Pitman heading in the only goal. Holloway's men will now be looking to earn a league double over the Pirates after a 3-0 victory at The Mem in the reverse fixture.
