Grimsby Town (A) preview

Grimsby Town v Bristol Rovers
Sky Bet League Two, Blundell Park, Saturday 30 August 2025, 3pm KO

Bristol Rovers will be looking to go three matches unbeaten in Sky Bet League Two when the Gas travel the breadth of the country to face Grimsby Town.

Darrell Clarke's Pirates head into Saturday's clash at Blundell Park on the back of four points from the last two league matches, at home to Oldham Athletic and Cambridge United respectively.

The Mariners will be a tough test though, having enjoyed an immense start to the 2025/26 season. With eleven points from five league matches played, David Artell's side are unbeaten so far this campaign, are joint top goalscorers in League Two and are flying high after one of the biggest wins in their history: a Carabao Cup victory over Manchester United on Wednesday evening.

Travel…

The journey to Grimsby from Bristol is not a straightforward one and any fans making the trip should highly consider an overnight stay, given the 230 miles separating the two.

If travelling by car, take the M42 exit to Sollihull/B’ham (E)/N.E.C./Airport at Junction 3A. Continue onto the M42 and then follow signs for M1/Tamworth, continuing onto the A42.

Merge onto the M1 via the slip road to Nott’m (N) at junction 32, take the M18 exit to Scunthorpe/Grimsby/Airport. At the roundabout, take the 3rd exit and stay on A180, then at the second roundabout, take the 2nd exit onto Westgate/A180. At Lockhill Roundabout, take the 2nd exit onto Cleethorpe Road/A180 and continue to follow A180. Turn left onto Constitutional Avenue and the Blundell Park should be on your right.

If taking the train, please note that the journey requires a minimum of two changes and takes approximately five hours each way if departing from Bristol Temple Meads. The nearest station to Blundell Park is Cleethorpes train station, from which you can walk towards the stadium.

Opposition…

What a week for Grimsby Town.

Never mind their impressive opening to the 2025/26 Sky Bet League Two season, the Mariners made history with their unforgettable efforts on Wednesday evening, securing a Carabao Cup penalty shoot-out victory over the giants that are Manchester United.

Having led 2-0 in the fixture, it could be argued that Grimsby should have won the game inside the regulation 90 minutes, such was the effort of their performance against the Red Devils.

While media outlets will enjoy running the grand headlines about the latest cup-set, largely focusing their analysis on the failures of Ruben Amorim's side, those in the know about Grimsby Town are significantly less surprised by the outcome. If anything, it is the latest milestone on an impressive run for the Mariners since returning to the EFL in 2022.

The three years back in Sky Bet League Two have yielded differing results but, following a ninth-place finish last season, it looks like Grimsby Town are on the up again. Unbeaten in the league so far this campaign, with the most shots in League Two, the highest xG and the most touches in the opposition box, early season form has supporters dreaming of a climb back up the EFL once again.

Previous Meetings…

Rovers' last encounter with Grimsby Town was certainly a memorable one for Gasheads.

It came in May 2015, in the Conference Premier Play-Off Final. The Mariners had taken the lead through Lenell John-Lewis but Ellis Harrison's equaliser meant penalties were required at Wembley Stadium.

Of course, everyone remembers Lee Mansell's winning spot-kick, one of the most iconic moments in recent Rovers history.

The Gas have won 16 additional games against Grimsby Town, despite losing the last meeting in league football 4-3 back in 2007.
