MATCH PREVIEW

Bristol Rovers v Plymouth Argyle
Vertu Trophy, The Memorial Stadium, Tuesday 11 November 2025, 7:00pm KO

Bristol Rovers will look to secure first position in the Southern Section Group B of the Vertu Trophy when they welcome Plymouth Argyle to The Memorial Stadium on Tuesday night.

The Pirates are one point behind the Pilgrims and know only a victory in normal time will see them finish in top spot due to Plymouth's superior goal difference.

The Gas opened their Vertu Trophy campaign with an eight-goal thriller against Tottenham Hotspur U21s, coming from three goals behind to draw 4-4 before beating Spurs on penalties. Rovers then claimed a narrow victory over Cheltenham, with Luke Thomas scoring the only goal of the game with a fine strike from the edge of the box.

Plymouth have won both of their fixtures so far, beating Cheltenham 2-0 before an impressive 6-2 victory over Spurs.

Opposition...

Plymouth have had a tough season back in Sky Bet League One. The Pilgrims finished second from bottom in the Championship last term. They had a bright end to the campaign under Miron Muslic, who led them to three wins in their final five games as well as a famous victory over Liverpool in the Emirates FA Cup towards the start of his tenure. However, he could not stop them from avoiding relegation back to the third tier.

Muslić switched to 2. Bundesliga giant FC Schalke 04, before the start of the 2025/26 term, with Plymouth electing Tom Cleverley as their new head coach. The former Manchester United midfielder had a difficult start at the club, losing his first four league games at the helm.

A positive September saw Plymouth beat Stockport County, Luton Town, and Burton Albion. Nevertheless, Argle have gone through another difficult patch, losing their previous four games in the third tier and are at the bottom of the table.

Plymouth will now be looking for a reaction and will know they will finish top of the Southern Section Group B if they avoid defeat to the Pirates in normal time.

Previous Meetings...

Plymouth have got the better of Rovers in recent meetings and are unbeaten in the previous five contests against the Gas. The last time the two teams met at The Mem in the EFL Trophy was back in January 2023, with Ben Waine and Ryan Hardie scoring to eliminate the Pirates at the quarter-final stage.

Before the streak of disappointing results against Plymouth, the Gas themselves were on a good run. Four straight draws between September 2018 and December 2019 were played out before back-to-back wins for the Gas. The Pirates beat Plymouth 1-0 at Home Park in the Emirates FA Cup before a 3-0 victory at The Mem in Sky Bet League One, with Alfie Kilgour, Luke McCormick and Zain Westbrooke all scoring.
