Bristol Rovers 1-0 Shrewsbury Town
Sky Bet League Two, The Memorial Stadium, Tuesday 17 March 2026
Tommy Leigh netted a late winner as Bristol Rovers secured a 1–0 victory over Shrewsbury Town at The Memorial Stadium in Sky Bet League Two.
The match got off to a slow start, with the visitors appearing to have more control during the early stages. A header from Will Boyle went wide, while Iwan Morgan saw two promising efforts drift off target, as the sides went into the break level.
However, despite the visitors' early control, Rovers found the breakthrough, and it was Leigh who proved to be the difference once again, netting a decisive second-half winner - his fourth goal in three consecutive games in the famous blue and white quarters.
The Pirates' victory is their fifth in six matches at The Mem, moving them up to 40 points, ten above the relegation zone with eight matches remaining.
The match began with the Shrews showing early promise, starting with a very early header from Boyle that went wide to the right. They continued to threaten soon after, with Iwan Morgan racing down the right before drilling a low strike across the goal and wide of the left post.
The Pirates soon responded with attacking intent, pushing play into the opposition half, though they struggled to carve out a clear-cut opportunity. Fabrizio Cavegn was denied a clear run on goal by a well-timed challenge from Connor Stubbs.
Further opportunities followed for the hosts, as a long throw from Riley Harbottle eventually found Clinton Mola. He did well to beat his man inside the box before cutting the ball back to Leigh, whose effort was blocked by the Shrewsbury Town defence.
Salop continued to threaten, with Morgan coming close again - this time firing a powerful long-range strike that skimmed the crossbar. Late pressure from the Gas nearly paid off in the four minutes of added time. A corner led to a scramble in the box, but Shrewsbury managed to clear the danger. Moments later, Joe Quigley volleyed over from a promising position, and the half ended goalless.
The second half started end-to-end, with both sides searching for a breakthrough but lacking the final touch. Rovers began to build momentum, delivering several balls into the box, though none of the efforts sealed the deal.
Shrewsbury made the first substitution of the game, shortly followed by a triple change from Steve Evans, who introduced Yusuf Akhanrich, Ellis Harrison, and Luke Thomas as both sides looked to break the deadlock.
Akhanrich quickly looked lively, going close twice, first striking wide, then narrowly missing the target after a good link-up with Joel Senior. At the other end, Shrewsbury threatened from a free kick, but it was comfortably dealt with by a Harrison header. The Shrews dropped deeper and deeper, allowing the Gas to dominate the late stages and control the ball in Shrewsbury's half.
The opener finally came in the 78th minute. A long throw from Kofi Balmer caused problems, and after a partial clearance, the ball fell to Leigh, who fired a powerful strike into the bottom-left corner to give the Pirates the lead and ultimately the win.
Shrewsbury pushed for an equaliser late on, with 10 minutes of added time providing further pressure. However, Rovers pushed to extend their lead until the end and remained defensively strong, dealing with a late corner to secure all three points.
