The visitors started strongly, with Luke Southwood forced into a clever save to deny Charlie Whitaker before gaining the lead through Nathan Smith's header into the bottom corner.
Tranmere then scored three second-half goals to put the game beyond the Pirates' reach. Connor Jennings netted a brace before Josh Davison found the back of the net with just over ten minutes to play.
Alfie Chang thumped in his first goal for the Gas five minutes from the end, but Darrell Clarke's men fell to a defeat. The Pirates will now look to get back to winning ways when they travel to Crawley Town next Saturday.
