However, Darrell Clarke's men fell behind when Sullay Kaikai's precise pass forward matched the run of Louis Appere, who finished accurately into the bottom corner.
Chances for the Gas were few and far between, with signing Fabrizio Cavegn creating Rovers' best chance for himself in his first appearance at The Mem. The forward got down the right before cutting inside to make space for a shot, but his low effort was pushed away by Jake Eastwood.
The hosts were pushing for a leveller, but the U's struck the crucial goal to double their lead and put the tie beyond doubt. A former Rovers duo combined, with James Gibbons crossing for Ryan Loft, who directed his header past Luke Southwood.
