The contest started with chances few and far between before the Gas began to dominate. Joel Cotterill was at the heart of the action, first lifting a free-kick towards Clinton Mola, who headed just wide before then slamming the post with a shot of his own from close range.
The Magpies were under pressure and went down to ten men, with Tyrese Hall shown a straight red card for a tackle on Macauley Southam-Hales. Darrell Clarke's men continued to create chances after the restart, with Ellis Harrison twice denied by Kelle Roos before Freddie Issaka rattled the bar with a strike from range.
Notts then scored against the run of play with five minutes left. Matthew Dennis' right-footed strike deflected off a defender and beat Luke Southwood. The Pirates have the chance to bounce back from defeat when they face Cambridge United in the Vertu Trophy Round Of 32 on Tuesday night.
