After a stop-start first half with chances few and far between for either side, the Pirates came out of the blocks quickly after the break and established a two-goal lead in the contest thanks to a brace from Luke Thomas.
The 26-year-old reacted quickly to Fabrizio Cavegn's rebound to open his account for the season from close range before getting his second moments later. Thomas latched onto a poor pass from Nik Tzanev and blasted his strike into the corner before Ellis Harrison added the Gas' third goal off the bench.
Newport scored two late goals to bring a tense ending to the contest, but Darrell Clarke's men held onto their lead to secure all three points for the third straight game.
