"Football is nothing without fans" | Manager Nathan Hallett-Young

Nathan Hallett-Young

As the 2025/26 campaign draws closer, we caught up with First Team Manager, Nathan Hallett-Young, to get his thoughts on the season ahead, from building on last year's progress to new signings, fan support, and the club’s identity.

"The fanbase is why we exist. Their support drives us on, helps us through tough moments, and pushes us to uphold the standards we set for ourselves."

What are your ambitions for the team this season, both in the league and cup competitions?

"It’s clear from us - we want to improve. Last season laid some really strong foundations, and they’ve now become the benchmark for what we aim to achieve going forward. If we can build on that and take it up another level, we’ll have had a fantastic season. Whether it’s in the league or the cups, we’re not here to stand still - we want to compete."

What lessons did you and the squad take from last season’s campaign, and how are they shaping your approach this year?

"We learned early on just how quick and physical this league is. It’s another level compared to what we were used to, and we had to adapt fast. Tactically, I think we were solid last year - but to compete consistently, we’ve got to match that physical side too. That’s been a major focus in our pre-season prep. If we can combine both, we’ll be a tough side to beat."

How would you describe the identity or playing style you're aiming to build this season?

"Togetherness. That’s always been at the heart of our identity. We work hard to create a strong bond within the squad - a group that fights for each other, no matter the situation. Last season, there were games where we weren’t necessarily the better side on paper, but because of our unity and commitment, we came away with results. That mindset - that belief - is powerful. It doesn’t matter if our backs are against the wall; we know we’ll dig in together. That spirit has been key to our success, and it’ll be vital again this year."

There have been some key additions over the summer - what qualities have they brought to the group?

"Every season, players come and go - that’s part of the game. We’ve had some big names move on, players who’ve been a huge part of our journey over the past couple of years. But if we want to keep growing, we’ve got to recruit well and bring in players who challenge for places. That competition raises standards.

I’m really pleased with our recruitment this summer. It shows intent - a desire to push on. The new players have brought a real technical edge and tactical awareness. Even in the early stages of pre-season, you can see the levels rising, and that’s exciting."

How have the players responded to the demands of pre-season so far?

"It’s been a really positive start. Pre-season has been all about connection - getting the new players embedded, building relationships, and reinforcing our identity as a group.

We’ve taken a slightly different approach this year. It hasn’t been a gruelling start - more of a steady build-up. The focus has been on match fitness above all else. We’ve scheduled more games than in previous seasons to help us hit the ground running once the competitive fixtures start. Hopefully, that gives us the best possible chance to start strong."

How important is the club's connection with its fanbase - and what impact do the supporters have on the players?

"It’s everything. The fanbase is why we exist. Their support drives us on, helps us through tough moments, and pushes us to uphold the standards we set for ourselves.

Football is nothing without fans. I’m genuinely excited to share another season with them and hope we can continue to make memories together. Last year, we had a great average attendance at the Mem, and we’d love to see that grow again.

Whether it’s long-time season ticket holders or new fans coming down to see the famous blue and white quarters for the first time, we want to build on what’s already a fantastic matchday atmosphere. The more people we have backing us, the more we can achieve."

Are there any fixtures that stand out for you - ones the team is especially looking forward to?

"Honestly, we’re excited for every game. That’s why we do this - to play, to compete, to enjoy it.

That said, there are always a few that catch the eye. The West Country derby against Swindon is one we always look forward to. Then you’ve got the long away days, like Worthing, that bring different kinds of challenges.

But for us, it’s about focusing on each game as it comes, staying grounded, and doing ourselves justice every time we pull on the shirt. That’s the aim - week in, week out."

What would success look like to you at the end of the 2025/26 season?

"Success would be knowing that we’ve improved - as individuals, as a team, and as a club. If we can look back in May and say we’ve taken that next step, raised our standards, and competed at the top end, then I’ll be proud of what we’ve achieved.

We’ve got big ambitions, and with the squad we’re building, the staff around us, and the support of our fans - there’s no reason we can’t turn them into reality."
