Five players to play for Rovers and Barnet

PLAYERS

As Bristol Rovers prepare to travel to Barnet in Sky Bet League Two, here are five players who played for both teams.

It is an important week for the Pirates, who have the chance to turn their form around after losing their previous eight fixtures in the fourth tier. The Gas travel to the Bees on Tuesday night before welcoming local rivals Swindon Town to The Memorial Stadium in Saturday's early kick-off.

As for Barnet, they gained promotion from the National League last season and are 14th in the table after drawing their previous five fixtures.

This will be the first league meeting between the two teams since January 2016, when Barnet beat Rovers 1-0 thanks to a goal inside five minutes from Gavin Hoyte.

Gatlin O’Donkor

O’Donkor, who currently plays for Championship side Oxford United, joined both Barnet and Bristol Rovers on loan in his career.

After setting the record for being the youngest ever Oxford player at the age of 16 years and 55 days, O'Donkor joined Oxford City briefly, then returned to his parent club. The attacker was then a regular for Oxford in the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons, playing 49 times in Sky Bet League One and scoring twice.

The forward then went on loan to Barnet in February 2024, scoring five goals. He netted on his debut in a 4-2 away victory at Fylde and went on a streak of four goals in five games in the National League.

O'Donkor then received regular minutes in the Football League when he moved to Rovers on loan in the 2024/25 season. The striker made 33 appearances across all competitions last term, netting four times. The striker is back at Oxford. However, he has only made one league appearance this campaign.

Ed Upson

The midfielder, now retired, started his senior career at Ipswich Town and moved to Barnet on loan in 2010. He made nine appearances for the London side and scored for the Bees in a 2-1 loss against Macclesfield.

His last appearance with Barnet came in their 1-0 victory over Rochdale, before then moving permanently to Yeovil Town, Millwall and Milton Keynes Dons before switching to Rovers in 2018.

Upson made 121 appearances for the Gas across all competitions across three seasons. He scored five goals and registered eight assists. Upson moved to Newport County after his contract with Rovers ended, then to Stevenage and had stints at Stowmarket Town and Bury Town before retiring in 2025.

Abu Ogogo

He spent his youth career at AFC Wimbledon and Arsenal and twice featured on the bench for the Gunners in the Carabao Cup before moving to Barnet on a one-month loan in 2008, making his debut in a 4-0 home defeat against Notts County.

He scored his first goal in senior football during his time with Barnet, netting a goal from a Kenny Gillett cross, but the Bees lost 3-1 to Luton Town, and he was sent off in first-half stoppage time. His loan was extended until the end of the season, but his Barnet career ended with another red card, this time versus Port Vale, on the final day of the campaign.

After leaving Arsenal in 2009, he spent six seasons at Dagenham and Redbridge, playing 255 times in the league. In his first campaign, the defender played 30 times in Sky Bet League Two and helped the Daggers to promotion through the play-offs.

He then played for Shrewsbury Town and Coventry City before joining Bristol Rovers in 2019. He made his debut in a 2-1 win away at Southend United and scored his first goal for the club against AFC Wimbledon, heading in an equaliser in the 29th minute.

In the 2020/21 season, Ogogo moved back to his former club, Dagenham and Redbridge, and retired when his contract with Southend United ended.

In August 2020, Tutonda joined the Gas on a two-year deal after a successful trial period. He made his debut for Rovers against Sunderland and appeared 22 times for the Pirates across all competitions.

After leaving Rovers, Tutonda had spells at Gillingham and Morecambe, and now plays for National League side Rochdale.

In a career spanning four decades, McGleish has played over 1,000 competitive fixtures. The striker signed for Barnet in 1997 and made 143 appearances in his four years at the club. He scored 37 goals for the Bees before moving between clubs for several years.

McGleish signed for Bristol Rovers in 2011, netting Rovers’ first goal and assisting another one in his debut against AFC Wimbledon. The forward scored seven goals in 27 league games before going on loan to Barnet in March 2012.

He is now 51 years old but still turns out for Leverstock Green in the Southern League Division One Central, where he is also the assistant manager.
