After a first half with chances few and far between for either side, Luke Thomas broke the deadlock with his first goal of the season after the break. Fabrizio Cavegn drove his close-range shot against the right post before seeing his rebound saved, but Thomas was there to convert with the ball still loose in the box.
The winger then got his second of the contest just minutes later. An excellent Pirates press forced Nik Tzanev to play the ball straight to the 26-year-old, who blasted his strike into the back of the net.
Ellis Harrison came off the bench to get Rovers' third before the hosts looked to stage a late comeback. Kai Whitmore and Nathaniel Opoku netted late on for Newport, but Darrell Clarke's men stayed strong to collect their third straight win in Sky Bet League Two.
