The Gas were looking to extend their unbeaten run in all competitions to eight games, but were up against a second-place Salford side that had won their previous three fixtures in the fourth tier. The visitors gained the lead through a fantastic finish from Matt Butcher, who was on loan at Rovers for the second half of last season, before the hosts scored just before the break to level.
Luke Southwood's deep free-kick was flicked on by Alfie Kilgour towards Ellis Harrison, who showed composure to convert from close range to net his third goal in the fourth tier this term.
Darrell Clarke's men had all the momentum and came from behind to lead through Fabrizio Cavegn, who slotted his strike through the legs of Matthew Young and into the net to score before Salford had a late chance to level. Luke Thomas was adjudged to have fouled Jorge Grant, but Luke Southwood denied Luke Garbutt's stoppage-time spot-kick.
