Bristol Rovers is delighted to announce the signing of forward Bobby Kamwa.
Kamwa arrives at The Memorial Stadium after spending the last two seasons at fellow Sky Bet League Two side Newport County, where he scored 14 goals and registered nine assists in 95 appearances across all competitions.
The 26-year-old will now continue his career in the blue-and-white quarters, becoming the Gas' seventh signing of the summer transfer window, and has penned a two-year contract at the Club.
“I’m excited to be here,” he said. “Since I heard about it, I’ve been excited to come and see what it’s like at The Mem. I played there last season and it was rocking. So, it will be nice to get a feel of that every week.
“Steve was straightforward with me. We have the same understanding of what we want for my career and where he wants the team to be. We’re looking to stay at the top and fight to go up. That’s the plan and I’m looking forward to that.
“When Bristol Rovers came in, it was a no-brainer. The aspirations the Club have got fits what I want for my career. It's the time where I am getting to my peak and I can’t wait to show what I can do at The Mem.
“It’s only been six weeks, but I’ve missed those goal-scoring moments, and I am sure I will replicate that for Bristol Rovers. They are a big side with good players. I have been watching them closely and they had a good end to last season and hopefully, we can carry on that form into next season. I just can’t wait to meet everyone properly and get going.”
Manager Steve Evans said: “Bobby Kamwa is a player that most managers from the Championship and down through the EFL will like and be aware of. I first became aware of Bobby when he was 12 or 13 at Leeds United, starting on his Academy program. He was very gifted as a kid, he has superb abilities. He had a stunning end to the season, helping Newport secure their Football League safety.
“He is someone I always thought I could work with and develop, and we’re delighted to get him in considering the options the boy had. My references taken tell me the lad has a fantastic attitude, and our supporters will take to him because he scores some special goals and likes to entertain. He’s a wide player who works hard, and that’s harder to get than some would imagine. He works extremely hard for the team; he takes defenders on, dribbles, and gets fans off their seats. The Gasheads will love him.”
Kamwa was born in Douala, Cameroon, in 2000, before moving with his family to Leeds in 2009. He joined Leeds United's academy aged 13, making his first senior appearance during a loan move to Scottish Championship side Dunfermline Athletic in the 2021/22 season, coming off the bench in a 2-0 victory over Queen of the South. Overall, he made seven appearances for the Pars.
The attacker departed Leeds in 2022 and signed for Sky Bet League One side Burton Albion. Kamwa played 47 times across all competitions during his two seasons at the Brewers, netting five goals before moving to Newport in August 2024.
He had his best scoring campaign during the 2024/25 season, bagging nine goals in 43 Sky Bet League Two appearances to finish as the Exiles' top scorer.
Kamwa netted five goals and registered four assists in the fourth tier last term, playing a crucial role in Christian Fuchs' team's battle against relegation.
Kamwa netted twice in Newport's 3-2 win over Oldham Athletic on the penultimate day of the season, with his match-winning strike in the 18th minute of second-half stoppage time ensuring their survival was in their own hands. The 26-year-old then came up with another important moment on the final match of the campaign, scoring another winner, this time away at Barrow, to help keep Newport in the league.
Everyone at Bristol Rovers would like to welcome Bobby to the Club and wish him every success in his career in the blue-and-white quarters.
