Fabrizio Cavegn | I love scoring at The Mem

Fabrizio Cavegn

Fabrizio Cavegn said he loves scoring at The Memorial Stadium after bagging a brace in Bristol Rovers' 5-3 win over Newport County in Sky Bet League Two.

The Swiss striker showed great instincts to get onto Tom James' clever pass before driving the ball into the bottom corner to put the Pirates 2-1 ahead, then adding the fifth goal in the final seconds to complete the victory.

The 23-year-old netted 15 goals in all competitions last season, but it was his first strike in the blue-and-white quarters at The Mem in a competitive fixture since the Gas beat Newport back in January.

Speaking to BRTV after the contest, Cavegn was pleased to get his first two goals of the season and insisted the comeback was helped by the Gasheads that packed the stadium.

REACTION TO CONCEDING EARLY

"I think I was shocked after the first goal, but we were like, we saw each other in the eyes and said, we have to switch on; we have to come back now, show them a reaction. So many people turned up to The Mem today, and it was brilliant. They came here, and then we said at half-time-  we do it for them."

SCORING JUST BEFORE HALF-TIME

"I think there was an important goal to go into half-time at 1 -1  and come back with good confidence."

HIS FIRST GOAL TO PUT ROVERS AHEAD

'I think the first one was a good ball from TJ, just to take a touch. I saw the defender come on my left side, and I took it onto the right foot and just shot. It went quickly and went in. It was a great feeling. I love to score here and at The Mem."

DEFENDING IN THE FINAL MINUTES

"We were all together in the box to defend, and then Reiss took in the ball, and I saw the space, and the goalkeeper was in our box as well, and then he played a good pass to me, and then I went through.

"It looks very simple, but it's the goals that you can think a lot about until you are in the box and until you are in front of the goal. But I think I had two good touches in front, and then, yeah, I am quick, and then I score my second goal.

BACK TO HIS BEST?

"Of course, maybe not my best best, but I feel fresher. I feel like I can play with confidence. We had a good few training sessions before, and then I could bring back my confidence and bring it back into the game."

DIFFERENT ATTACK

"Today was a little bit different. Normally we play with two strikers, and today I was on my own, but I had good support, very good support from Tommy and on the side with Bobby and Shaq. It was brilliant today."

THE MEM

"We said all week, we said send in training, we play at home now, we start a season now, this is our home and we show them and we have the fans, we have the Gasheads behind us, and it's very good."
