Bristol Rovers were knocked out of the Carabao Cup Round One after losing 1-0 to Peterborough United at The Memorial Stadium.
The Gas started brightly against their Sky Bet League One opponents with Jack Aitchison and Tommy Leigh coming close in the early stages. However, when Riley Harbottle jumped for a header in his own box, he was deemed to have handled the ball, and Peterborough were awarded a penalty that Harry Leonard slotted in.
The Pirates would look to respond in the second half, Fabrizio Cavegn making an immediate impact after coming on and looking to drive at the visitors’ defence. His run would lead to Macauley Southam-Hales being played in, and his cross was met by Shaq Forde and Leigh, who both had shots blocked.
Kennan Gough and Reiss-Alexander Russel-Denny both made their first appearances in the blue-and-white quarters, and they combined for Rovers' last chance of the tie, Russel-Denny cutting inside past a defender before setting up Gough on the edge of the box, but he would fire over.
Brad Young pumped a kick up the field for Leigh to pluck out of the sky to lay it to Jack Aitchison, who took on his man before floating a left-footed effort narrowly over. Leigh’s floated free-kick delivery would find the head of striker Joe Quigley, but his header was wide of the post.
The Posh then scored against the run of play. Harbottle rose for the ball, but he was deemed to have used a hand, and the referee awarded the visitors a penalty. Leonard stepped up and dispatched the penalty into the bottom left corner to give the away team the lead.
Leigh unleashed an effort from outside the box, forcing Alex Bass into a low save as the Gas began to build momentum; however, Peterborough should have doubled their lead when they found themselves in a four versus two situation, but Bolu Shofowoke’s effort was poor and allowed Young to save.
Both teams looked dangerous when they ventured forward; Quigley found himself locked in battle with both Peterborough centre-backs, and Owura Edwards looked to drive at Ben Purrington every time he got on the ball.
Cavegn was sent through on goal before laying in Southam-Hales, whose low cross was dangerous, causing chaos in the box as Leigh and Cavegn both saw efforts blocked at close range.
Harbottle pounced to win the ball on the halfway line before playing in Cavegn, but his low shot was saved by Bass. Soon after, Kofi Balmer’s long throw-in was met by Harbottle in the box, but his effort was straight at the keeper.
Both Gough and Russel-Denny came on for their debuts for the Gas, and looked bright in the midfield. Russel-Denny in particular looked threatening, delivering crosses on the left-hand side.
Russel-Denny would be bright again, flashing a cross into Peterborough’s area, but Mees Rijks' flicked effort could not find the target. Rovers' last chance would come as Russell-Denny chopped inside past a Posh defender before laying it off to Gough, but his effort went over.
