Bristol Rovers fell to a second consecutive away defeat in Sky Bet League Two after losing 3-0 to Gillingham at MEMS Priestfield Stadium.
Rovers started brightly, with Jack Aitchison looking positive on his first league start of the season and Bobby Kamwa and Shaq Forde shooting wide from outside the box.
Gillingham responded with pressure of their own. Brad Young made a top save to deny Ronan Hale's first-time strike from the left side of the box before the hosts threatened through Harry Waldock and Lamin Sillah.
The Gills edged the chances in a first half that ended level before Gareth Ainsworth's men dominated the second period, netting three times. James Brophy broke the deadlock, cutting inside from the left and curling his strike past Young before Sheldon Kendall came off the bench to bag a brace and secure all three points from the hosts.
Steve Evans made three changes to the team that lost to Grimsby Town last match, with Aitchison and Ciarán Kelly making their first league starts, replacing Tommy Leigh and Riley Habottle. Ellis Harrison also came into the attack for Fabrizio Cavegn.
Aitchison started brightly, combining sharply with Forde. After a neat one-two, Aitchison cut the ball back for Kamwa, but his first-time effort drifted wide of the far post. Forde threatened soon after, pouncing on a loose clearance and driving into the box, yet his right-footed strike failed to trouble Oliver Wright.
The Gills began to grow into the game, with Waldock repeatedly looking to exploit the channels. One dangerous run saw him flash a low cross into the area, but Kofi Balmer stretched and made a crucial interception. Young was then called into action on 31 minutes, reacting superbly to parry away Hale’s driven back-post volley after a deep delivery. Sillah also went close for the hosts, dragging a speculative effort wide from distance.
The home side edged the first half chances, coming closest when a looping cross found an unmarked runner arriving in the box, but the resulting header sailed over Young’s bar. Rovers had moments of promise yet lacked the final touch to turn their build-up play into meaningful attempts on goal.
Gillingham found the breakthrough early in the second half. A loose clearance fell kindly for Brophy, who cut inside past Forde and fired low beyond Young to give the hosts the lead. Rovers almost produced an instant response as Tom James' delivery found Ben Purrington, but his improvised effort was caught by Wright.
The hosts doubled their advantage in the 84th minute when a whipped cross into the centre was met by substitute Kendall, who swept home clinically into the bottom right corner.
Kendall gained confidence from his first goal and netted his second goal with one minute of normal time left. Will Goodwin got down the left and played the ball across the box to the winger, who converted from close range on the second attempt.
Rovers pushed to alter the scoreline in the closing stages, with Balmer launching a series of long throws into the penalty area. Despite the pressure, Gillingham’s defence stood firm, clearing their lines repeatedly and ensuring all three points and a clean sheet.
