Fleetwood Town 3-1 Bristol Rovers
Sky Bet League Two, Highbury Stadium, Saturday 31 October 2026
Bristol Rovers fell to a fifth defeat in six Sky Bet League Two outings after a 3-1 defeat to Fleetwood Town at Highbury Stadium.
The Cod Army came into the game four days after a historic Carabao Cup win over Premier League champions Arsenal and showed all of their qualities by leading by two goals at the hour mark.
Aaron Loupalo-Bi broke the deadlock with a fine finish into the bottom corner before Rhys Bennett powered a close-range header past Brad Young to double the hosts' advantage.
Reiss Russell-Denny gave the Gas a chance with six minutes left to play, chipping a clever effort over Jay Lynch and in, but Josh Robertson netted on the counter to confirm Fleetwood's victory.
Loupalo-Bi, who showed great composure to score against the Gunners in midweek, should have given the hosts the opener within the opening five minutes. The forward got behind Rovers' defence and went around Brad Young before hitting the bar from close range when it looked easier to score.
Rovers had a couple of half-chances, with Tom James curling a free-kick wide and Jack Sparkes having a shot blocked before Loupalo-Bi made up for his earlier miss. Lewis McCann slipped the ball into the forward, who sent a low, reverse strike into the bottom corner from inside the box.
The Cod Army then went close to doubling their advantage moments later. Mark Helm raced down the right, ignoring options in the middle before driving his shot across goal and just wide of the left post.
Joe Quigley replaced Shaq Forde at half-time to add height to the attack, but Fleetwood started the strongest. Crispin McLean's dangerous cross from the right was almost diverted in by Rovers defender Clinton Mola before Helm blasted an ambitious shot from range just over.
Ronan Coughlan then should have probably done better, heading McLean's cross straight at Young before Bennett made no mistake and made it two. Harrison Neal's inch-perfect cross found the defender, who powered his header beyond Young.
The hosts had all the momentum and went close to gaining a three-goal lead soon after. McLean was the creator once again, curling his cross towards Coughlan, who was free in the box but was denied by a sharp save from Young.
Fleetwood kept piling on the pressure. McCan's thunderous strike was blocked brilliantly by captain Alfie Kilgour before Rovers got one back in the closing stages. Russell-Denny got down the right and chipped a clever effort over Lych, with the ball bouncing off the post and in off the goalkeeper.
Rovers pushed men forward searching for a leveller, with the Cod Army making the most of limited numbers at the back to score a third on the counter. Will Davies rushed forward and played a pass into Robertson, who shifted the ball onto his left foot before curling it in to complete Fleetwood's triumph.
