Gillingham v Bristol Rovers
Sky Bet League Two, Priestfield Stadium, Saturday 21 March 2026, 3pm KO

Bristol Rovers will be looking to continue their good run of form as they head to Gillingham in Sky Bet League Two.

Despite a defeat against league leaders Bromley on Saturday, a Tuesday night victory over Shrewsbury Town put the Gas back in good stead. Despite the Shrews coming close in the first half in the form of strikes from Iwan Morgan and George Lloyd, it was Tommy Leigh’s second half strike which secured the three points for the Gas.

Now the Pirates must travel to Kent where they must face their next challenge against Gillingham, who currently sit 16th in the table with 45 points.

Gillingham most recently challenged promotion hopefuls Swindon Town, where they fell to a 2-0 defeat. Despite Ainsworth’s side creating the majority of the chances, a lapse in defensive gave the Robins’ the advantage in the 68th minute by Aaron Drinan, then doubled by substitute Fletcher Holman closing in on full time.

Opposition...

Established as New Brompton FC in 1893, then changing their name in the 1912/13 season, Gillingham have had a large string of successes through the football leagues.

Following promotion in the 1999/00 season after coming from behind with two last minute goals in the playoff finals against Wigan Athletic, the Gills spent five seasons in the second tier of the football pyramid, until their relegation 2004-05 season. Their highest ever league finish was 11th in the Championship.

Gillingham were also FA Cup quarter-finalists in 2000, being denied a semi-final place by Chelsea, with their fixture in February 2000 ending 5-0, with goals from Tore André Flo, John Terry and George Weah.

Gareth Ainsworth was, since, appointed as first team manager in March 2025, helping Gillingham escape relegation and finish 17th in the 2024-25 season.

The Gills currently sit 16th in the Sky Bet League Two table, with eleven wins so far this season and will be looking to add to their tally. Coming off of the back of a loss against Swindon Town on Tuesday night, despite a strong performance, Gillingham will also be looking to bounce back.

Previous Meetings…

The Gas and the Gills have matches dating back to January 1921, where Gillingham took a 1-0 lead in their Division Three test. Bristol Rovers currently have 47 wins and Gillingham have 44 wins in their 112 matches played.

Bristol Rovers suffered a narrow defeat in their most recent test back in November 2025, after Max Clark netted a strike from 20 yards after being played the ball in from fellow full-back Remeao Hutton.

The Gas last had a victory over Gillingham in March 2019, despite a cagey game, a second half strike powered into the top corner from Johnson Clarke-Harris lead the Pirates to an emphatic victory.
