Tommy Leigh scored the only goal in Bristol Rovers' 1-0 victory over Rotherham United in Sky Bet League Two.
Fabrizio Cavegn and Bobby Kamwa put pressure early as Rovers carved out chances, with Leigh eventually smashing in the opener after Kamwa’s initial effort was saved. Leigh nearly doubled the lead soon after, while Shaq Forde curled narrowly wide in a quiet first half.
Rovers threatened repeatedly from set pieces, with Riley Harbottle and Ben Purrington heading over before Kofi Balmer’s close-range effort was tipped onto the bar. Ellis Harrison also went close with a flicked header that deflected just wide as the Millers struggled to deal with the pressure.
The Millers finally tested Brad Young late on, but he denied Fabio Tavares before Jack Aitchison and debutant Philip Sanyaolu added fresh energy going forward. The visitors pushed until the final whistle, hitting the bar in stoppage time, but Balmer’s crucial clearance and resolute defending secured all three points for Rovers.
Steve Evans named an unchanged team for the second game in a row, putting his faith in the players who helped the Gas beat Crawley Town and Colchester United.
Cavegn looked dangerous in the early spells of the game, being released down the line by Kamwa before twisting and turning and looking to find Shaq Forde in the box, but his delivery was blocked.
Ben Purrington then lifted a cross into the middle for Tommy Leigh to attack as Rovers looked to take the lead, but once again, the Millers defended well. Soon after, Leigh broke the deadlock; his ball over the top found Kamwa, whose shot was saved but rebounded back to the edge of the box for the midfielder to smash in to give Rovers the lead.
Leigh nearly scored again, sliding to get on the end of Clinton Mola’s inch-perfect delivery, but his effort hit the side netting. A second half with chances coming few and far between would end with Shaq Forde coming close with a curling effort from range.
A quick start to the second period saw Riley Harbottle head just over from a corner. The Pirates looked threatening from set pieces as Purrington was the next to head over following a short corner.
Tom James’ free-kick delivery caused chaos as a clearance fell for Kofi Balmer, but his scrambled effort was tipped onto the bar by Ted Cann. Another set piece created problems again for the Millers as Ellis Harrison’s flicked header hit a Rotherham defender and went narrowly wide.
Rotherham’s first real effort of the game came in the 79th minute as Young denied Tavares’ header from close range as the Millers looked to equalise. Jack Aitchison was bright after coming on, turning his man and playing in Reiss Russell-Denny before getting it back and seeing a low effort saved.
Sanyaolu came on for his first appearance in Sky Bet League Two and looked to drive at the defence, and his low effort from outside the box was narrowly wide.
Rotherham fought till the end and almost levelled in the final seconds. Tavares smashed the bar with a curling effort before Mullin's poke was blocked by Young, with Kofi Balmer then clearing the danger to help Rovers hang onto three points.
