The Mariners started the day unbeaten in the fourth tier with one triumph and four draws, while the Pirates topped the fourth tier after four straight wins, meaning both teams came into the contest with confidence.
Rovers started brightly, but the hosts took control with two goals before half-time. Kieran Green gave Grimsby the lead with a poked finish before Géza Dávid Turi found the top corner with a powerful strike from range.
The Pirates made three substitutions at half-time to try and battle back into the contest, but Grimsby remained in control and held onto their lead. The Gas then finished the game with ten men after Tommy Leigh was sent off following an off-the-ball incident in the Mariners' box.
