The Pirates were looking to build on a bright start to 2026, starting the new year with a thumping 3-0 win over Shrewsbury Town before a tight defeat in a seven-goal thriller against Sky Bet League One side Plymouth Argyle, but struggled to pose a threat in the final third.
The U's had the best of the chances, with Samson Tovide forcing a top save out of Luke Southwood and Micah Mbick hitting the post with a flicked effort before Owura Edwards struck a superb winner from range.
The Pirates pushed for a leveller late on, but Ellis Harrison headed his attempt at Matt Macy, and Isaac Hutchinson crashed the bar before full-time.
