The Magpies knew only a win would give them a chance of gaining automatic promotion and started with plenty of energy, with a packed Meadow Lane cheering them on. Shaq Forde saw a low shot across the goal pushed away by James Belshaw before the hosts broke the deadlock, with Nick Tsaroulla directing a low shot in after Alassana Jatta's header was blocked.
The Pirates had their own aims and were looking to be the only side in England's top five leagues to win nine straight league games. Steve Evans made changes at half-time, with Tommy Leigh and Yusuf Akhamrich making an impact.
Leigh played the ball into Forde, who drilled a shot wide before the Bradford City loanee chipped a clever ball over to Ellis Harrison, who crashed a powerful effort in from a tight angle. Akhamrich then curled an effort wide before Jacob Bedeau thought he had won it for Notts in the final moments, but the flag went up for offside.
