Bristol Rovers 1-2 Salford City
Sky Bet League Two, The Memorial Stadium, Tuesday 20 October 2026
Bristol Rovers fell to a narrow home 2-1 defeat to the in-form Sky Bet League Two division leaders Salford City.
The Ammies took the early lead through Brendan Wiredu’s special strike on six minutes and the confidence in the away side swelled as Daniel Udoh grabbed a second for the visitors midway through the first half.
Rovers desperately scratched and clawed for a way back into the midweek match. An improved second half showing saw Ellis Harrison strike the woodwork with a penalty kick, but Jack Sparkes halved the deficit with a well-taken free-kick on 57 minutes.
The home side battled in search of what would have been a deserved leveller. Tom James and Reiss Russell-Denny both went close, forcing saves from Will Norris, but could not force the finish to draw the game, seeing Rovers beaten.
The form guide favoured the visitors to BS7 ahead of kick-off in Tuesday night’s League Two encounter, and indeed Salford looked the brighter of the two sides early on, making their pressure count with a terrific first-time finish by Wiredu; his strike curling away from Brad Young and into the top corner on six minutes.
Salford’s early dominance in the tie continued and Peter Cklamovski’s team grabbed a deserved second on 20 minutes when Udoh squeezed in from close range from Luke Molyneux’s cross.
The Gas seemed shellshocked by the opening proceedings and needed a quick shake-up to get back into the game. Ellis Harrison fought valiantly and blazed a half-volley over the bar on the half-hour mark, more in frustration than anything else.
It was an effort that finally spelt the turn of the tide back towards Rovers, however, with Harrison’s flick-on to Cavegn almost resulting in a home goal. The No29’s quick thinking found Forde’s late run into the box but his first-time effort was smothered by Will Norris.
It was a spark though. Something for the Pirates to hold onto, with the Mem crowd pushing them forward.
Rovers needed a mammoth performance in the second half, and the spirit and energy were there as the Gas pressed and pushed from referee Whitestone’s opening whistle.
Ciaran Kelly will wish he had done better from 12 yards on 50 minutes, when his first-time effort was over the bar, before Forde again struck a shot straight at Norris in the Salford goal.
Hope filled The Memorial Stadium when Clinton Mola was fouled in the Salford box. Penalty for Rovers. Up stepped Harrison but the No19’s rocket powered back off the cross bar.
Just moments later, though the Gas had a goal back. A foul on the edge of the area saw a free-kick given and up stepped Sparkes, curling in across goal to reduce the deficit.
Roared on by the approval of the home crowd, Rovers kept pushing for the leveller. Full-back James almost caught Norris off guard with a powerful shot at the near post, before substitute Russell-Denny saw a long-ranged attempt spilled by the Salford shot-stopper.
Another trio of substitutes entered the fray with ten minutes to play. Bobby Kamwa, Joe Quigley and Arvin Appiah added to Rovers’ attacking outlet, with all the pressure into the goal at The Thatchers End.
Balmer fired a powerful attempt over the bar with two minutes of normal time to play, while Young made a superb stop as the match ticked into five additional minutes.
The away side thought they grabbed a third late on, only for the offside flag to rise, but the early damage done condemned the Gas to a fifth consecutive league defeat.
