Bristol Rovers staff complete the Prostate United challenge

Prostate United

A number of Bristol Rovers staff members have shown their support for Prostate Cancer UK by completing the Prostate United challenge.

Participants are invited to be active every single day in October by either walking 3km or 5km, running 5km or 10km, or cycling 10km or 25km.

Created in 2018 by fitness and performance staff at Rotherham United, the challenge has grown exponentially with thousands of people across football taking part every October, with more than £1.5 million raised in support of Prostate Cancer UK.

Gavin Crowe, Head Of Medical and Performance, has supported the initiative every year since its inception and led a group of staff across the Club in the challenge throughout October.

A few of us have completed the challenge and I hope our supporters and the local community will donate to those guys who have committed to testing themselves every day in October.

With October now over, those participating in Prostate United have completed the challenge. Staff across Rovers have either run 5km a day, cycled 10km a day or, in Crowe’s case, done both.

He is proud of the efforts shown by the group and hopes to continue to raise much needed donations in the name of Prostate Cancer UK.

“Every year I’ve been in football, we’ve supported Prostate United through participating in the challenge,” he said. “We did it last year here at Rovers with great success and we’ve given it another go this year.

“A few of us have completed the challenge and I hope our supporters and the local community will donate to those guys who have committed to testing themselves every day in October.

“My colleagues and I decided to run 5km every day and a couple of us also did a bit extra in doing 10km on the bikes as well. We wanted to make more people aware of what we were trying to do by making it a bit more challenging for ourselves.”

For Crowe, just as important as raising money is raising awareness about prostate cancer.

The Club has championed awareness through The John Green Campaign and Crowe is eager to keep men talking about their health.

He added: “This is an issue we need to keep combating and not shy away from. The Club has already done a fantastic job in promoting prostate cancer awareness with The John Green Campaign and it’s so hard for men to talk about these sorts of things.

“If, by doing these challenges, we can get men to talk about these things, then that’s really important.”
