Bristol Rovers pays tribute to Robin Stubbs

Robin Stubbs

It is with great sadness that we have learned of the death of former Bristol Rovers striker Robin Stubbs, who has passed away at the age of 85.

The Birmingham born striker turned professional with his hometown club in 1958 and scored 17 goals in 61 league games whilst at St Andrews.

He joined Torquay United in August 1963, and it was from Plainmoor that he signed for Rovers, in July 1969 with Rovers paying Torquay a fee of £10,000.

He made his debut in a goalless draw at Southport on 9th August 1969, the first of his 93 league appearances for Rovers. He also scored 32 league goals for us and was the first player to score four goals for Rovers in an away league match, a 4-1 win at Gillingham on 10th October 1970, and he was the club’s top goalscorer in 1969/70 and 1970/71.

In February 1972 Robin returned to Torquay United, with John Rudge joining Rovers in an exchange deal. His two spells with the Devon side would see him score 121 goals in 238 league games and he retained a strong connection with the club continued after he retired from playing.

Described as one of the best players to pull on a Torquay United shirt, he was named Honorary Club President of The Gulls.

We send our condolences to Robin’s family and friends at this very sad time.
